TopTenREVIEWS - Silver Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set

Love him or hate him, the Travelocity Gnome has come to accept the “TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award.” Travelocity is one of the leaders in the online travel website industry. They provide bookings for flights, hotels, cars, cruises and activities. Travelocity provides some of the most flexible search features on the Internet.

In addition to travel flexibility, with Travelocity you can get fare updates, check flight status and use travel guides sponsored by Frommer’s. It was a tough call between Travelocity and the #1 service, Expedia. Travelocity lacked a few informational resources and there was several times our search failed or stopped. Travelocity charges a $5 service fee for domestic flights and $10 for international flights.

Additional Features:

Travelocity includes a low fare guarantee on all bookings including air, hotel, car and cruise. In order to qualify you must contact Travelocity within 24 hours of making reservations with them. All booking information has to be identical including name, flight, dates, times, airline, rental company, hotel, cruise line, etc. The guarantee is not eligible on purchases made before you know the details, like with Priceline’s “Name Your Own Price.” If Travelocity agrees you qualify, they will refund you the difference and give you a $50 coupon for a future booking.

You can also purchase travel insurance, manage your itinerary and receive free newsletter updates.

Booking Options:

With Travelocity, you can book flights, hotels, cars, cruises, trains and activities. You can make your flight search as strict or flexible as you’d like. One of our favorite search features is the flexible dates option. This is great for those looking for the best price regardless of dates. These flights will often have some restrictions including ineligibility during peek travel times like the holidays. However, these are great if you know you plan on visiting friends or family in a few months.

Travelocity includes an activities section. Here you can book theater tickets, site seeing tours, sports tickets and more. Unfortunately, there are only about a dozen American cities to choose from and less than a twenty worldwide.

Train tickets can be booked through Amtrak or Rail Europe.

There’s a service charge of $5.00 for all domestic flights and $10.00 for international. If you need or require a paper ticket Travelocity will charge $30.00 to $40.00. This does not include the fee the airline may charge. Additionally, if you need to change your itinerary through Travelocity there is a $30.00 charge. This does not include the fee the airline will charge, which is usually about $100.

Resources:

At the Travelocity travel info center, you can check flight status, news and security updates and weather. There is passport and visa information and traveler’s reviews.

One of Travelocity’s most informative features are destinations guides sponsored by Frommer’s. These guides cover cities from around the world.

Additionally, there is information about cruising in the Cruises section. This includes guides to cruising with the family, FAQs, first–timers tips and excursions.

Ease of Use/Support:

Everything is clearly labeled which makes Travelocity easy to use and easy to navigate. They provide telephone and email support as well as, a comprehensive FAQ with a search feature and additional online help guides. Our biggest difficulty with Travelocity was its load time. There were several times our search locked, stopped loading or returned us to the homepage. The average user may not experience these inconveniences; however, the long load times and timing out may become frustrating enough for customers go to another travel website.

Summary:

Travelocity is a trustworthy and dependable online travel service. We have used this service before and have never had any problems. Their booking options and search features make this site easy to use for those with tight and flexible schedules.
